How to Design Lava Text Effect in Photoshop

Hello everybody!!  Thanks again for joining with us today. We are going to discuss about how to create a Lava effect Style in Photoshop.

For this tutorial, you will need bit time and some resources. what we are trying to do here is design the Do text as if it’s been created with Molten lava. And above design will be the final outcome of what we are going to create.

Resources

Step 01

  • Open Photoshop and create a new document. We are using 5000x3000px for the size so we can use it as desktop wallpaper for your PC/ laptop.
  • After that put take the type tool and type any name or a word you like, mine is Design Optimal, I will simplify it as DO, as we always DO. And save it as Lava Effect .psd.
  • The font I used is Franklin Gothic Demy. Now fill the background with a related texture. We used Grunge-texture_01. Now duplicate the texture layer and make the layer blending option in to multiply and merge the two layers.
  • After that add a Brightness/Contrast layer and give these amounts
    • Brightness: -70
    • Contrast: +70.

Step 02

  • Then we used llava_texture_4_by_eliatra_stock-d4fsig7 and mask it over the letter “D” and do the same with the letter “O”.
  • As for the next step, we will add inner shadow for the text. The amounts are shown below.

Step 03

  • As for the next step, we will use Flowing_Lava_by_hitokirivader and we will be using some parts of it. Mask it on top of the letter D and erase off some parts as shown in next couple of images.
  • And we will be only needing the areas with molten lava. Take a blurry brush, erase off background, and only keep the lava area. After that duplicate the layer and blend it in to Overlay.
  • Repeat the same texture for some different parts of the letter “D” as shown in below.

Step 04

  • Then we used a texture called Cooling_Lava and we will use the molten lava art of it to show as if the lava is dripping out of the letters Contour. We will again erase off the unwanted parts with a Blur Brush.
  • Duplicate the layer after that and again make the blending option to Overlay. Now repeat it in another place or two in the Letter “D” as you desire. The process has been shown below.

Step 05

  • We will repeat the same effect to the letter “O” but we will change the lava texture parts that we used than the letter “D”.
  • We will be using the lava textures called flat, 550×550, 075,f and Flowing_Lava for the letter “O”.

Step 06

  • As for the next steps, we will add some flames and some smokes as it was coming out from the letters. For this, we will be using the textures called flame, smoke_PNG965 and the misc_smoke_element_png_by_dbszabo1-d54jdyai.
  • For the beginning,  we will add some flames to both letter “D” and “O” as if the flame is coming out from them.

  • Repeat the same with the letter “D”. The sequence of creating the same effect to letter “D” is shown below.

Step 07

  • After that, we will add some smoke the letters with the lava so it will seem like these letters were created fresh from the lava 😉 you know what I mean.
  • We used the smoke_PNG965  and added it to over the lava areas of the letters like the smoke is coming out form these areas.

Step 08

  • We will add a texture to the bottom text saying the Design Optimal. We used texture named lava_texture_4_by_eliatra_stock-d4fsig7 that we used earlier and masked the letters.
  • Now duplicate the masked texture layer and make the layer blending option into Multiply and copy the inner shadow that we add to the DO letters and paste it.

  • After that, I thought of making the Background texture bit darker than now, so I duplicated the layer and multiplied it.
  • Then end result would be like this.
